All you need to know about rTMS treatment for depression

What is RTMS?

RTMS is called Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and is considered an effective treatment for depression. It is a drug-free, non-invasive method to heal the cause of depression, using magnetic stimulation to brace the areas of the brain that controls our mood. As our brain is an electrical organ that functions through the transmission of these electrical signals between the nerve cells. So, this method works with the changing magnetic field to use it to create electric currents at a specified area of our brain through electromagnetic induction. You may find depression treatment in Hyderabad as one of the finest regions in India.

How does it work?

RTMS influences our electrical brain activity via a pulsed magnetic field. This pulsed magnetic field is created through rapid currents by a coil of wire. The coil of wire is cooped up with plastic and then placed close to the scalp of the client to focus the pulsed magnetic field on a certain specified area of his/her brain. The currents of the magnetic field then penetrate the scalp and then the skull without causing any pain to the person. Since the treatment is performed at regular intervals of time, that’s why it is named repetitive TMS or commonly known as rTMS.

Why rTMS is used?

For some people, usual standard treatments are not that effective in the case of depression. Like the prescribed medications and therapy talks. So, when other depression treatments have not shown much effect, rTMS is preferably used. Asit painlessly stimulates the regulation of mood control and activates the regions of the brain which were decreased in the activity due to depression. While stimulating the nerve cells it also helps in improving the symptoms of depression.

Possible side effects and complications

This treatment procedure has been around for more than 30 years, but for healing depression, it is still considered a fairly new method. There is no reason to fear it because it does not require deep brain stimulation or surgery or implantation of electrodes. Therefore it will not cause anything severe like seizures or anesthesia. It is considered safe and tolerated among people. In any case, there are some gentle conceivable secondary effects and confusions that it might cause. Here are the following:

  1. Lightheadedness
  2. Mild Headaches
  3. Tingling on face, jaw, or scalp
  4. Spasms or jerking of facial muscles
  5. Scalp discomfort especially where the stimulation took place.

Now, the point to remember is that these effects are moderately improved right after the duration or a short session of time. Your doctor may call you for additional sessions and also might ask you to take counter pain medication before the beginning of the whole procedure. Also, he or she will then adjust the stimulation depending upon his/her clients and if the above symptoms get noticed the level might get decreased in the next sessions.

Who should avoid rTMS?

The age restriction for this procedure is for patients less than 18 years old and patients who are more than 68 years old. Other than this people with psychotic disorders like schizophrenic, schizoaffective, bipolar disease, or major depression that involves severe psychotic features should avoid rTMS. Also, the patients who have undergone a seizure or a medical condition or anything else with their medical history should strictly take safety concerns.

Some patients who already have implanted metals in their bodies cause of certain diseases should be avoiding it too. Then the patients who have just attempted suicide should be not opting it. Plus someone with a history of substance abuse or physiological signals or neurological conditions must also avoid it. Then definitely women who are pregnant or are nursing must also be preferred to avoid this treatment.

Duration of rTMS

The typical estimated duration of rTMS continues to4 to 6 weeks. But it may vary depending upon the patient’s cause of depression and his/her response to this treatment. The most commonly performed procedure offers in an outpatient setting which means the asked patient is required to make 30 separate visits to complete the entire treatment. Approximately you can say that this method takes an entire month to perform and function.

While it has been seen that some patients feel the benefits of rTMS within the first 2 weeks of the procedure. And others might don’t even notice the effects until several weeks pass by. Hence you may say that younger people experience the advantages faster than older people as their brains will adapt to certain changes faster. The treatment costs about $200-300 for each day-by-day meeting. Working out that into Indian cash it goes more than about ₹ 50,000. What’s more, something like 10 meetings is required relying upon the sickness and the individual.

As a result, if rTMS worked for you completely the depression symptoms will go off completely and you will attain a sense of relief after a few weeks of the treatment. Gradually you may work, drive, dance, sing follow your daily routine. Sometimes the rTMS treatment can even be repeated as a re-induction episode. And the techniques to carry the whole process could also even vary depending upon the doctors and their professional team.
